Danganronpa Review

Danganronpa:

A fun anime to kill time or to watch with friends on a Sunday morning; it can be watched with younger audiences but enjoyed by older ones as well, the basic premise is a group of high school students get an invitation to a prestigious school; but after arriving are pitted against each other in a death game accented by pink blood, over the top death sequences and a maniacal fluffy two-faced teddy bear. I found the anime to be quite enjoyable regardless of its apparent lack of identity, does it want to be a gritty drama or light hearted comedy; its apathy in this department detracts from the entertainment several times throughout leaving you wondering how you should feel about a situation. Is it funny or heartbreaking? Looking past this however the plot is well done if a little linear and it doesn’t allow you to solve the mysteries with the characters as much as would be preferred due to the paraphrased investigation scenes, character development can be lacking due to many of the characters dying before they have a chance to express their feelings more clearly, the characters that are fleshed out are done so in a manner that is consistent and well done. My final verdict is that this anime is worth a watch but don’t come into it expecting death note or attack on titan, it knows it’s not that deep but finds redeeming qualities in its dark humor, solid plot that has a few well thought out twists towards the end, and comically brutal death scenes.
